The first fundraising event in aid of the 2013 Actavis LifeCycle Challenge will be taking place on Saturday at St Anne Square in Sliema, combining the chance to make a difference in the lives of Renal Unit patients with the opportunity to raise awareness about the health benefits of cycling.

The public will get the chance to use a spinning bike against a donation of to LifeCycle, while demonstrations will also be given by some of the participants who have already signed up for this year’s gruelling challenge, which will take them some 2,000 kms from Belarus to St Petersburg via the Baltic states.

There will also be animators, face painting, stalls selling cakes, sandwiches, cookies, and tea and coffee, while competitions will also be organized with a variety of prizes. There will be entertainment throughout the day, and VIPs and celebrities are also expected to attend and have a go on the bikes.

“We invite people to come along any time between 10 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. and try it out as cycling is really one of the best ways to improve your health through exercise and it is suitable for people of all ages and all fitness levels,” organizer Steve Mifsud explained.

“Of course, LifeCycle is an extreme version of this as the cyclists do an average of over 200km a day – in very difficult conditions, encountering everything from steep mountain ranges to arid plains, and from incessant rain to scorching sunshine. However, there are always dozens of people ready to take on this endurance feat as they appreciate how difficult it is for renal patients to lead a normal life once they require regular dialysis sessions.”

The 2013 Actavis LifeCycle Challenge will take place between 17th August and 1st September (including flights and preparation days).
