What is your first impression of the Armed Forces of Malta? What are your thoughts on young people joining the Armed Forces?
The Armed Forces of Malta is a group of people whose duty is to protect the country. On one hand, joining the AFM instils discipline in young people. On the other, it promotes a sense of patriotism which, in itself, might cause conflict and rivalry. David Mizzi, 20, Bachelor of Arts in History of Art and Philosophy.
I surely believe that the AFM are professionally-trained individuals who are passionate about their job and willing to make sacrifices to reach their ultimate goal in protecting the country. I think the most important ingredient that makes up the AFM is the personnel who are dedicated in what they do every day. Jan Andre Sciberras, 19, Mcast-Btec Higher National Diploma in Business.
When I think of the AFM I instantly think of a determined person ready to defend the country in any circumstance. I believe that deciding to join the army is not an easy decision to take. Although the AFM may not constantly face challenging situations as those of other countries, it still provides protection to our country. Angie Polidano, 20, Mcast-Btec Higher National Diploma in Business.
Would you consider it a service to the country and the people?
It is a service to the country, but one can also serve as a civil worker. David Mizzi
I strongly believe that the work that the Armed Forces of Malta conducts is aimed to satisfy the need to ensure there is tranquillity in the country and that it is protected. This can only be done through the work that the soldiers carry out. Jan Andre
Yes obviously, it is a noble service which a person dedicates to his or her own country and people. Not only do these people provide their service to their own country but the service is, at times, provided to other countries. Angie Polidano
How would you react if a member of your family expressed the wish to join the AFM?
If they have considered the option long enough, I see no real problem. David Mizzi
Everyone has the right to pursue the career he or she wants. If someone from my family tells me he or she wants to join the AFM, I would surely encourage them. However, there are young people who want to join the AFM because of social media influence and they do not realise the sacrifices they need to make to become part of a military organisation. Jan Andre
I think I would be rather shocked at first; however, despite it being a tough decision I would still support them. I believe everyone should have a scope in life and this includes having your own ambitions. Angie Polidano
