The Siġġiewi Basketball School Open Day in aid of Puttinu Cares will be held on June 1.
The Siġġiewi Basketball Club, which has been in operation for 37 years, has over 100 young basketball players enrolled, between the ages of three and 16.
The event, which is in its second year and is being sponsored by Re/Max Malta, is being organised by Peter Farrugia and Karl Borg, president and head coach of the school respectively, together with other club members.
The main objectives of the event are to provide a fun day for children who participate in school events and to collect funds for Puttinu Cares, a charity that is close to the school’s heart.
The open day will kick off at 8am with car washing. This will be followed by a basketball shooting competition for girls and boys in the under-six, eight, 10, 12 and 14 age groups.
As part of the festivity, a veteran team made up of ex-Siġġiewi basketball players will play a game against the club’s current senior squad. There will also be a mini basketball festival for boys and girls under 10.
Re/Max Malta CEO Kevin Buttigieg said they attended the event last year and were quite surprised with its pristine organisation. Besides the love for sport, the event was being organised in aid of a special charitable organisation. “It is our corporate social responsibility to give back to the community and by sponsoring this event we are doing just that,” he said.
Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Stefan Bountempo and Malta Basketball Association president Paul Sultana will attend.
