The Occupational Health and Safety Authority, in collaboration with the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, organised a half-day seminar on crane erection and examination.

The event was organised by owners, erectors and examiners of cranes. Joachim Schulz, member of DGUV Expert Committee Construction Industry of Germany, was the keynote speaker.

OHSA senior manager Vincent Attard welcomed the delegates, followed by a presentation by principal officer Kevin Gauci on local legislation and enforcement on the operation of cranes.

Joachim Schulz delivered two presentations on the safe erection of tower-cranes and on the examination of cranes on sites.

Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia emphasised that examination of cranes is very important because it has a direct effect on the safe operation of such work equipment, which has the potential to cause serious accidents.

“At EU level, discussions are taking place on the issue of establishing a minimum standard of competence of people who carry out examinations on cranes,” he said.
