Originally formed in 1998, the band Iskay, featuring musicians from Peru and Malta, released its debut album a few years back. As the band is keen to point out however, that album featured mainly covers; an exercise perhaps in testing the variety of musical co-ordinates within the band via the music of others.
It makes sense then, that the band is presenting Phaway Urpi as its debut album in the sense that it is their first to feature original material.
As the name Iskay (meaning ‘two’ in the old traditional Peruvian language) implies, the band’s sound weds elements from two cultures, namely Latino American and Mediterranean.
Punctuated on one part by the prominence of panpipes and flutes, Iskay’s music also features a variety of Western instruments, that lend a more contemporary feel to the end result.
The traditional roots are still evident to an extent, but the band’s own compositions point to a hybrid that is much more than the sum of its parts. The band will be launching its new album later today with a live performance at Zion Reggae bar in Marsascala.
Locals Brodu and Danjeli will also be performing. Entrance is €3.
