Former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is expected to resign his seat in Parliament in the coming days.

It follows his resignation from the leadership of the Nationalist Party and the election of Simon Busuttil.

Dr Gonzi served as Speaker before his election as an MP in 1996. He was also PN general secretary and deputy leader before being elected leader nine years ago.

His retirement will trigger a casual election in the seventh district, with the favourites being former MPs Peter Micallef and Tony Abela.
