Columnist Daphne Caruana Galizia was this morning acquitted of failing to stop on the site of a traffic accident she was involved in.

She was found guilty of disobeying police orders and fined €15.

Ms Caruana Galizia pleaded not guilty to failing to stop at the accident at the Mater Dei Hospital car park on September 27, involuntarily damaging another person’s car, insulting the victim and disobeying police orders.

The court acquitted Ms Caruana Galizia of damaging another person’s car since a quotation of the damage caused was not presented. As a consequence, she could not be found guilty of failing to stop on the site of a traffic accident.

However, she was found guilty of disobeying police orders because she did not take her car to the police station as ordered. She claimed she was tired after spending a day at the hospital with her mother.

The magistrate noted that in spite of this, Ms Caruana Galizia still went to a restaurant for dinner. She could easily have gone to the Mosta police station where the restaurant was located when asked to by the police.

Testifying, Ms Caruana Galizia said that an accident had never taken place and she left the scene because she was afraid of the complainant who behaved in a threatening manner towards her.
