A 20-year-old man has been arrested by Indian police on suspicion of raping a four-year-old girl, the latest incident of sexual violence to shock the country.

Officer BS Jaiswal said police arrested the suspect in New Delhi yesterday, the same day he is accused of assaulting the girl, who is his neighbour. The girl was taken to hospital where she was said to be in a stable condition today.

The girl was home alone at the time of the attack and was found crying outside her home by another neighbour.

Last month, a five-year-old girl died after being raped in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Two men have been arrested in connection with that attack.

And last December India was shaken by the gang-rape of a student on bus that was being driven through New Delhi. The woman later died from her injuries.

The rape sparked outrage across India about the treatment of women in the country.
