The Labour Party, bless its little cotton socks, has decreed that Simon Busuttil should eliminate "us and them" politics.

No doubt, as soon as he doesn't do what Labour's heart desires, the usual chant of "thirty six thousand and you didn't learn your lesson" will start ululating from the general direction of the chorus.

Excuse me while I stick a couple of fingers down my throat and trigger the gag-reflex, if only figuratively. If I were so inclined, I'd be ROTFL, adding MAO (work it out for yourself) for good measure.

Would you credit it?

The party that rode cynically and opportunistically on the over-inflated egos of those who have now been thankfully consigned to the rubbish-tip of history, saving their illusory elevation in gratitude, has the gall to whine about "us and them politics"?

Remember, please, that these are the people who brook no dissent, because they won the elections. If you dare gainsay them, you are an enemy of the people, you haven't got it, it being the lesson a thirty six thousand majority teaches. These are the people who want the Opposition to get into bed with them, because they want to govern as a "movement", whatever that ludicrous concept means.

The "us" in Labour's equation is the party that has just elected its leader in an exhibition of mature politics that the "them", with their history of dirty tricks and anonymous letters to delegates, could never hope to emulate.

You only have to look at Labour's heroes, at the renegades they lionise and the former nemeses that they now adore, to come to the conclusion that you'd better not hold your breath waiting for them to get it right.

There are elements within Labour who want to do it right, to be sure, the green shoots of hope are sprouting sporadically, but on the evidence to date, they're outnumbered by the ones whose motto is "my way or no way"."

Why not?", as the PM said when asked why David Felice was asked to step down as V-18 Chairman.

They have thirty six thousand reasons why not, by their own lights, but there are those of us who do not agree with them.
