Richard Cachia Caruana insisted in court this morning that he never used the Security Service against anyone and never had the authority to do so.

He was testifying in libel proceedings against One Radio and Evarist Bartolo.

Taking the witness stand, the former consultant to the prime minister presented the transcript of a One Radio programme aired on May 19, 2012 where it was claimed that he used the Security Service against people whom he did not like.

This, Mr Cachia Caruana insisted, was a lie that had very serious implications.

“I have never used the Security Service against anyone or against people I did not like. These words are defamatory because they paint me as someone who illegally uses the organs of the state. I have had nothing to do with the Security Service,” he said.

The case was then deferred for June 10.
