Ohime Mag and Mars took the honours in the two class Premier races held during yesterday’s 18th meeting of the season at the Marsa racetrack.

Twelve horses lined up in the first class Premier race.

It was Normand d’Oger (Clifferty Calleja) the fastest horse early on, opening a length’s lead over Ourasi Diams (Emmanuel Fenech) and Ohime Mag (Ronald Cassar).

With 200 metres to go, the early pacesetter started to slow down and in the final straight it was overtaken by Ohime Mag which gained its second win in Malta.

Sultan November (Shawn Portelli), Ofackevo (Julian Farrugia) and Ourasi Diams followed in that order.

Ohime Mag clocked an impressive average time of 1.14.6” per kilometre.

The second class Premier race produced a keen tussle between five trotters in the final 100m.

In the end it was Mars (Rodney Gatt) which chalked up its first win of the season from Okilaibo (Julian Farrugia) and Arnie Sensation (Jean Pierre Farrugia).

Favourite Nabab du Chatelet (Charles Camilleri) was very unlucky in this race. This French trotter changed its pace midway through the final straight and was later disqualified.

Mars registered a good average time of 1.14.7” per kilometer.

In the only class Gold race of the day, Baron GL (Clint Vassallo) surrendered the lead to Austrian Blizzard Ad (Frencu Cassar) with 100m from the finishing line as the latter claimed its first win at Marsa.

Pepone du Castelet (Charles Camilleri) was second ahead of Baron GL and Onyx Lucernais (Jason Cordina).

Yesterday’s card also included two races for class Silver trotters.

Quo Vadis Phedo (Clifferty Calleja) confirmed that is one of the most consistent horses this season.

This French trotter secured its fourth win of the campaign after increasing its pace 500m to the end.

Second place went to Nasdaq du Closet (Eugenio Zerafa) which placed ahead of Cal Win (Shawn Portelli) and Ocean Brillouard (Noel Baldacchino).

In the second class Silver race, Cross Country FC (Salvu Vella) nosed ahead midway through the final straight and claimed its first win of the year from Newman (Kevin Sciberras).

Another meeting at Marsa will be held next Sunday afternoon. The first race will start at 2.30pm.
