At long last I managed to spend a Sunday morning at the Bird Park in Salina.
I must confess that I was taken completely by surprise by the design and general layout of the place. It is exceptionally well-conceived as a typical swathe of pristine countryside eminently suitable to accommodate and exhibit the extensive, varied collection of thousands of birds and animals from every corner of the earth.
This is clearly a classic and magnificent example of what private enterprise, initiative and dedication can achieve.
I have been so impressed that I am determined to pay a second visit to see and observe the live exhibits and their surroundings at a much slower pace, at closer quarters and at different times of the year. The owners and the Government should engage in a widely coordinated advertising campaign to highlight this remarkable living treasure.
Malta, despite its diminutive size and limitations (and terrible reputation with birds) should be proud that it has this great attraction to offer its citizens and visitors.
