The billboard depicting an artistic impression of an embellished Independence Square (It-Tokk) in Victoria was already near the Banca Giuratale before the last general elections. It was removed soon after, and then fixed permanently to the ground after the elections.

This billboard obstructs the view of the old English telephone box beside the building. It mars the environment. The telephone box is a relic of British rule and is an attraction for tourists.

When one looks attentively at the billboard, one notices that the old trees that adorn the square and attract birds for the night are going to be removed to give way to smaller trees in pots.

So we will have no shade at all in summer and the square will be completely covered by huge tent-like umbrellas. What an attraction! The mayor of Victoria once assured me that there was no intention of getting rid of the old trees. Was it rhetoric?

The billboard also depicts the present taxi park, but there are no benches in sight. Has one to sit on the edge of the flowerpots? Will there be room for the traditional market on the square? What will happen on the feasts of St George and Santa Marija? Will the area be declared traffic free?

I, for one, am against these radical changes that completely distort the old shape of our main square, it-Tokk. Rabat, now Victoria, is not a modern town but an old one, and it must remain so.

We must be proud of that.
