Transport Minister Joe Mizzi, Economy, Investment and Small Business Minister Chris Cardona, Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella and Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth Edward Zammit Lewis recently participated in the International Maritime Law Institute graduation at the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa.

Thirty-six students graduated this academic year, four of whom are Maltese. The ceremony was introduced by IMLI director David Attard and presided over by Koji Sekimizu, secretary general of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

After congratulating the students, Mr Sekimizu said states as well as the shipping industry required the services of well-trained legal personnel with specialisation in maritime and shipping law.

IMLI is established under the auspices of the IMO, a specialised agency of the UN.

Dr Zammit Lewis presented the Maltese Government Prize for Best Performance in the Law of the Sea during the graduation ceremony. Mr Mizzi delivered Transport Malta’s prize for Best Performance in Shipping Law.

This year IMLI conferred on Emmanuel Kofi Mbiah (chairman of the IMO Legal Committee) the IMLI Graduate International Achievement Award, presented by Dr Cardona in recognition of his steadfast contribution to the international maritime community, particularly through his dedicated services to the IMO Legal Committee.

Speaker Anġlu Farrugia and Labour Party whip Carmelo Abela were also present.
