The FOR.U.M group of trade unions has called on the government to suspend the residents' parking scheme introduced by Sliema Local Council.

In a statement it backed complaints by the Malta Union of Teachers about the problems which the scheme has caused teachers in the five schools in the Sliema area.

It said teachers are delivering a sterling service for the whole community and they should be treated with respect and not as second class individuals.

"For this reason, FOR.U.M is requesting that the central Government should have legislation in place to suspend such an irrational and irresponsible decision taken by such a short sighted local council," the trade unions group said.

Local Councils should not be allowed to take such decisions at the detriment of the community in general, it said, also highlighting problems for other workers.
