Recently in the KSU election, SDM (Malta Christian Democratic Students) managed to successfully counteract the national swing against the Christian Democrats. They did not have to change their name, identity or values. They presented a strong manifesto and they consulted the students about their needs and aspirations. They were accessible.
Simon Busuttil – who speaks of the need for welcoming structures within the PN without renouncing its identity and values – is justifiably proud to be a former president of SDM. Today, backed by a political career incorporating a European dimension, he is one of the valid contenders for PN leadership.
The four candidates have accentuated the importance of having a party composed of a leadership team and members genuinely close to the people. It is good to know that they have agreed to make the most of what has been proposed by each one of them and they all pledged their loyalty to whoever is elected.
This augurs well for the PN and for Malta. It is essential to have a strong and constructive opposition to offer an alternative to the PL in government.
In the first weeks of this administration Malta is witnessing a situation which leaves much to be desired – among others – as regards ethically sensitive decisions, meritocracy and the handling of the excessive deficit procedure issue.
The SDM electoral victory seals the PN as predominantly a victorious party with the best policies for the people.
The councillors now have the responsibility to elect a leader to revitalise this party.
May the best candidate for this role win.
