FLORIANA-1, QORMI-0

Floriana coach Iain Brunskill signed off in style as the Greens beat Qormi 1-0 in their final league match this evening.

On the day Floriana were deducted two points over outstanding payments to two former players, the current crop showed no signs of being affected by the decision as they produced another solid performance to make it eight wins on the trot, the best run by any team in the top flight in the second part of the season.

Floriana created their first scoring chance after two minutes. Steve Pisani forced his way into the box but his effort was kept out by Steve Sultana, the Qormi goalkeeper. Brazilian forward Igor Coronado was first to the rebound but his shot was also beaten away by Sultana.

Tony Warner, the Floriana goalkeeper, also distinguished himself when touching away Kris Thackray's free-kick after 18 minutes. Three minutes later, Qormi thought they had scored when Joseph Chetcuti hit past Warner after receiving from Avila Perez but the Qormi winger was offside.

Scoring chances were rare but three minutes from half-time, Floriana broke the stalemate. Coronado's cross from a corner was headed on by Pisani and Carl Tremarco was on hand to flick the ball home at the far post.

Qormi threatened to level matters three minutes into the second half when Jonathan Bondin ran intoi the box after swapping passes with Avila Perez but his effort was stopped by Warner. The Floriana goalkeeper than stopped an effort by Edison Bilbao Zarate.

A goal in arrears, Qormi increased their efforts, Alfred Effiong hitting over after a fine run before Warner saved from Avila Perez who had been sent through by the improving Zarate.

Floriana were denied a second goal by Sultana who produced a good save to tip away Pisani's drive from the distance.

The game remained balanced but five minutes from time, Floriana missed a good chance to seal the points when Coronado freed substitute Luca Casha who blasted over.

Coronado, the Floriana forward, was voted BOV player of the match.
