The free weekend emergency service at Saint James hospitals in Sliema and Żabbar will be halted from this week, the Health Ministry said.

It appeared the service for the public was not reaching its goal and was costing the Government dearly, so was deemed unsustainable.

The previous government launched the service last May, with the aim of reducing the burden on Mater Dei Hospital’s emergency department at weekends.
