Two weekends ago my boyfriend came over from London to spend the weekend in Malta with me. On Friday morning we went shopping at a supermarket in Żabbar when all of a sudden this cute little dog (tal-but) ran in front of our car near the Hompesh Arch.
My boyfriend and some other people stopped to help this poor dog and thank God she wasn’t hurt. We named her Angel, as surely an angel from heaven was looking over her at that time. We took her to a vet, bought her a lead and some food and took her home with us for a bath, “bless her”.
At home I have four cats which were also stray, so I will leave their reaction up to the imagination of readers.
At that point we were a bit worried about what to do with the dog but we just could not let her out into the street again.
We filed a report at the Żabbar police station and they were very helpful and kind. We also put her on Facebook as a ‘lost and found pet’ to try to find her owner, or at least a good home. Four days went by and nobody claimed Angel. In the meantime she grew very fond of us and vice versa.
On the Monday at about 6pm we received a phone call from the Żabbar police station telling us that the owners had come to claim Angel. We were a bit sad at first as we had started to get used to her.
But she did not belong to us, so we had to take her back. The owners cried with joy when they saw her and we learned that her name was Lolita.
They explained that Lolita and another dog they owned had run away from their home in Żejtun when they were taking delivery of a washing machine and the door had been left ajar for a split second, allowing the two dogs to run away.
That same day at about 8pm the police at Żabbar called me again to inform me they had found the other dog as well.
This is the true story of Angel or Lolita. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Żabbar police, the Lost and Found Pets Malta page on Facebook and all those people who stopped on Friday morning to help.
As you can see, not all stories end in tragedy... this one had a very happy ending.
