Recently I led a Maltese delegation to Chojna in Poland in connection with an EU Comenius Regio project. Chojna is a member of the Douzelage, a town twinning association of 23 towns across the European Union.
We stayed at the Hotel Piastowska courtesy of Douzelage president Cezary Salamonczyk.
The visit and meetings were excellent until Thursday morning when one of us suffered an acute heart attack.
Paramedics were immediately called to the hotel where within minutes one of our participants was transported to one of the best cardiac hospitals in Szczecin by a helicopter. I would like to thank the management of the hotel for their prompt action which saved our friend from dying.
The wife of the patient and I were driven to Szczecin which took about 90 minutes. We were impressed that on our arrival at the hospital, the patient had already been seen to and was resting in his room.
The lady doctor on duty spoke English and explained everything to us. She told the patient’s wife that if it wasn’t for the prompt action her husband wouldn’t have made it.
Actually the rest of the group had to fly back home the day after so the patient and his wife remained at the hospital. We are in constant contact with them and we all wish him a quick recovery and hope that he unites back with us soon.
