Eyesight problems

I read the article regarding Lawrence Gonzi’s health (The Sunday Times, April 21) with interest and admit I was very sad to hear about his eyesight problems. I know how it feels to be in such a state as I suffer from a very similar condition in both eyes.

I know how it feels to be in such a state as I suffer from a very similar condition in both eyes.  My right eye has deteriorated to a very bad state and my left eye is also in a poor condition even though I have already had 13 injections at Mater Dei Hospital.

These injections have not improved my macular degeneration condition much although a new injection is now on the market and available from private hospitals. The price for this injection, which I need to take every two months, is in the region of €2,000 and is very much outside my budget, as I am a pensioner.

Finally, I appeal to the health authorities and the new Labour Administration to seriously start considering giving this injection free of charge, because people cannot afford such an expense.
