The Labour Party this afternoon described as shameful PN deputy leader Simon Busuttil’s attack on MEP Claudette Abela Baldacchino.

Dr Busuttil, speaking in Parliament yesterday, said her election had shamed Malta because she was undergoing criminal proceedings for alleged fraud in air travel tickets and would now benefit from immunity. He said the PL should not have allowed her to contest, especially as she had not contested the Qrendi council election for the same reason.

In its reaction the PL said Dr Busuttil's attack was a personal one and it was shameful. The people, it said, no longer wanted this style of politics, a style he still appeared to believe in. Furthermore, as a lawyer, he should know that a person was presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The party said Dr Busuttil was acting in this way to boost his PN leadership campaign by impressing the party councillors. But this did not augur well for the future.
