Surveillance cameras at an animal reserve in China caught a giant panda trying and failing to climb up a tree when a powerful earthquake hit southwestern China's Sichuan province on Saturday, state media reported.

Bifengxia Giant Panda Reserve is 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Ya'an, the epicentre of the 6.6 magnitude quake.

CCTV said the panda was playing in the garden when the quake struck. There are a total of 61 pandas in the reserve, and none of them was hurt in the quake, it added.
