Parliamentary Secretary Franco Mercieca has defended the limited waiver given to him by the prime minister, allowing him to practice ophthamlmic surgery despite the provisions of the ministerial code of ethics.

What had happened, he told Kurt Sansone in an interview was in the patients’ best interest and was discussed with the prime minister prior to his appointment.

Mr Mercieca said that had the prime minister showed any sign that he was in a difficult position he would not have been reluctant to resign.
