More than 30 athletes, mainly from Italy, the UK and Cyprus, participated in the second Gozo Hellfire Ultra Trail in perfect weather conditions. The Ultra runners and team pairs (runners and cyclists) left the main square in Nadur at 8.30am, while the solo mountain bikers left at 11am.
The route, which tests physical and mental endurance, was over 50 kilometres, with various checkpoints along the way. The scenically stunning course covered cliff-edge single tracks, lush valleys and water courses, seaside salt pans, sandy beaches and rocky terrain.
Gozo Minister Anton Refalo, who presented the prizes to the winners, congratulated the participants and organisers and emphasised the need for more eco and sports tourism events in Gozo. He said the Ministry would fully support such niche tourism markets.
