By the light of the silvery moon, even if it won’t be quite a full one, the air around the Bottegin Palazzo Xara (L’Isle Adam Band Club) in Rabat will be filled with the sound of folk music at around 6pm this evening.

Not the traditional kind of folk, but rather the genre’s more contemporary sounds. This, courtesy of two of Malta’s leading nu-folk acts, namely Kantilena and Stalko. The two bands are well-established on the local music scene – Stalko for their exquisite, yet warmly organic, blend of nu-folk with a mature pop flair, and lest we forget, their acclaimed 2012 debut album Grandiloquence; Meanwhile, Kantilena are known for their contemporary take on Maltese folk, with more than a dash of Mediterranean flavour thrown in for good measure.

The plan to stage a doublebill like the one taking place later today has long been on the cards, but more pressing commitments prevented it from happening earlier. The bands not only share a common passion for all things (but not only) folk, they’ve occasionally also shared band members, so this combined gig will probably also have some interesting surprises in store.

Add to that the fantastic backdrop and surroundings the magnificent Palazzo Xara will provide, its character mirroring that strongly in both bands’ musical repertoires, and it really couldn’t get any better.

Doors open at 4.30pm with the first band going on at 6.30pm. Tickets cost €6 and will be available at the door. For more information, look up the Qamar Sieket event page on Facebook or visit www.facebook. com/Kantilena or www.facebook.com/Stalkoband.
