The Government has continued to avoid questions about the duties Constitutional Convention coordinator Franco Debono will fulfil, more than a month after appointing him.
Questions requesting Dr Debono’s specific terms of reference and asking a Government spokesman to clarify his role were first sent to the Office of the Prime Minister on March 25.
Similar questions were also sent to Justice Parliamentary Secretary Owen Bonnici.
Almost one month and several reminders later, no reply has been forthcoming.
In criticising Dr Debono the PN was ignoring his potential and making the same mistakes that had led to its electoral defeat
The Department of Information press release which announced Dr Debono’s nomination had noted that his “first task” would be setting the terms of reference for the Constitutional Convention.
Dr Debono’s nomination to the new role of Constitutional convention coordinator prompted howls of disapproval from the PN when it was announced last month.
The Nationalist Party had taken offence to the appointment of its former MP Dr Debono, labelling the choice “divisive and insulting” and arguing that such a role would have merited consultation with the Opposition.
He voted against the Budget in November, effectively bringing down his own party.
Government spokesmen have retorted by arguing that, in criticising Dr Debono from the get-go, the PN was ignoring his potential and making the same mistakes that had led to its electoral defeat.
Dr Debono has hit back saying he campaigned for constitutional reform throughout his political career, both privately and behind the scenes.
