The General Workers' Union has called on the director of employment and industrial relations to take immediate action against Gafa Saveway, who, it said, was employing workers in precarious jobs.

Addressing a news conference, he said the owner of the company visited Boffa Hospital today, where it employed a number of cleaners, accompanied by a group of immigrants.

Workers felt threatened that they were going to lose their jobs and be replaced by the immigrants.

Mr Zarb said that’s, earlier this week, the union condemned the fact that the company made its employees sign a form, similar to a receipt, for the payment of a certain amount of money over and above their wages, which they never received.

The union had now contacted the employment director who said he would be looking into the matter. The union said it would no longer tolerate the situation and gave the director of employment and industrial relations until Monday to give a concrete reply.

The new government, he said, had taken a concrete stand against precarious jobs but the union wanted facts.

He expressed full solidarity with the workers and said the union was fully committed to continue fighting the situation.
