Carlo Ancelotti slammed his players’ attitude in Paris St Germain’s French Cup quarter-final game at Evian Thonon Gaillard on Wednesday night but the Italian coach took responsibility for the embarrassing elimination.
PSG were knocked out on penalties after Saber Khelifa had cancelled out Javier Pastore’s brilliant opener, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva both missing their attempt in the shoot-out session.
“It is a huge disappointment especially because of the team’s attitude,” Ancelotti was quoted as saying in French media.
The defeat ended the capital side’s hopes of achieving a Ligue 1-Cup double, one week after PSG were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals 3-3 on aggregate by Barcelona.
On Wednesday, PSG were nothing like the team who held firm against the Spanish champions.
“There was no concentration, no character, too much self-importance,” Ancelotti said. “The season is not finished but tonight is a disaster. I am sorry. It is my responsibility.”
The usually soft-spoken Ancelotti went as far as saying he had never seen PSG play that bad. “Was it our worst game? Yes. Am I upset with the players? Yes,” he said. “You can lose a game, but not in this fashion.”
PSG, who lead Marseille by nine points with six league games left, take on Nice tomorrow.
