A letter addressed to resident Barack Obama that contained a "suspicious substance" has been intercepted by the US Secret Service.

A spokesman said it was picked up away from the White House on Tuesday.

The letter came a day after another was sent to a US senator and it tested positive for poisonous ricin.

Tensions have been high in Washington and across the U.S. since the deadly bombings at the Boston marathon.
