The star witness in the case against lawyer and former police inspector David Gatt today confirm his previous testimony that Dr Gatt was being a string of high profile robberies.

Police Constable Mario Portelli, who has become known by his police number, PC 99 also denied that he was ever held at Mount Carmel psychiatric hospital.

Dr Gatt stands charged with masterminding the hold-up at HSBC headquarters in June 2010 and another on a jeweller in Attard that November.

Replying to questions by defence lawyer Joe Giglio about whether he had been arrested and investigated during the case, he answered in the affirmative, saying that it was Dr Gatt who told the police that he (Portelli) had sex with a prostitute while on duty.

During his questioning Dr Giglio asked Mr Portelli why he wore jeans to court when he had known he had to appear in court and was still a serving officer. Mr Portelli said that it was his day off.
