Former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s head of secretariat had been paid well over the level stipulated by guidelines on salaries for staff of ministers’ secretariats, Joseph Muscat said yesterday.

The overpayment went back to 2008 and had the approval of Dr Gonzi, the Prime Minister said in answer to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi.

He said his own current chief of staff was now receiving 10 per cent less than Dr Gonzi’s was, even though he had the additional responsibilities of the Strategic and Priorities Unit being set up in every ministry.

The Prime Minister’s chief of staff is Keith Schembri. Dr Gonzi’s was Edgar Galea Curmi.
