Xagħra council recently hosted an international conference about immigration as part of the Diami project, funded by the EU.

The project, involving Italy, Spain, Finland, Sweden and Malta, is aimed at creating awareness about the problem of immigration, which is affecting various countries and studying methods on how immigrants can integrate better within society.

The project consists of five conferences held in each partner country.

The conference, held at Ta’ Ċenċ in Sannat, dealt with second-generation migrants.

It opened with a speech by Gozo Minister Anton Refalo on the problem of immigration in Gozo and the Ministry’s vision to help immigrants integrate better.

Other speakers included Charles Pace from the Department of Social Policy within the University of Malta, Jon Hoiseter from UNHCR Malta and Fr Paul Pace from the Jesuit Refugee Service. A number of presentations also took place.

Foreign delegates taking part were taken around Gozo visiting Dwejra, Ramla Bay, Ġgantija Temples and Ta’ Kola Windmill.

The next conference will be held in Finland in mid-June.
