Qormi made it two wins in a row after they easily despatched of Melita 3-1 at the National Stadium this afternoon.

Qormi were all over their opponents right from the outset but it was Melita who almost struck on the half hour when Julian Galea’s precise cross found Daniel Cabanillas Ayllon whose effort came off the post.

Still it was Qormi who drew first blood four minutes from the break when Alfred Effiong released Moises Avila Perez who stormed through and beat goalkeeper Guillermo Gabilond Garcia with a firm drive.

The Amateurs hopes of a recovery were jolted a minute into the second half when Matthew Borg was shown a straight red card for passing remarks.

The decision infuriated coach Patxi Salinas who moved onto the touchline to show his displeasure and referee Clayton Pisani dismissed him. For the Spanish coach this was his third sending off from his team’s dug-out this season.

Qormi doubled their lead on 75 minutes when Edison Bilboa Zarate served Leighton Grech who fired home from an angled position.

Melita did manage to pull a goal back on 84 minutes when Ivan Tufegdzic nodded the ball into the path of Julian Galea who beat Matthew Farrugia with a low drive.

However, it was Qormi who sealed the points when three minutes from time when Leighton Grech was upended in the area by Manuel Sierra Camacho.

The referee ordered a penalty and showed the Melita defender his second yellow card and was subsequently dismissed. From the spot Alfred Effiong beat Gabilondo-Garcia.

Qormi’s Leighton Grech was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
