Malta has the second lowest level of tertiary education attainment among those aged 30-34 in the EU, according to Eurostat figures issued today.

The percentage was 22.4 per cent last year, an improvement of 1.3 per cent over the previous year.

The worse record was held by Romania at 21.8 per cent while Ireland topped the list with 51.1 per cent.

The figures show progress in reducing the number of early school leavers. The percentage in Malta last year was 22.6, an improvement of 1 per cent over the previous year.

Slovakia had the lowest percentage of early school leavers at 5.3 per cent, followed by the Czech Republic at 5.5 per cent.

Spain had the highest at almost 25%, followed by Malta. The EU average was 12.8 per cent, with 12 countries having fewer early school leavers than 10 per cent.
