New Labour MP Deborah Schembri revealed today that she will be chairing the parliamentary Social Affairs Committee.

She will also be a member of the parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe.

In her maiden speech in Parliament, Dr Schembri focused on the rights of minorities and said she would continue to insist on respect for minorities out of a sense of justice and in recognition of those former politicians who had had the courage of swimming against the current.

She also praised the government for already announcing measures to help minorities, such as by amending the marriage law to remove the hurdles faced by transgender people to marry after gender reassignment surgery.
