Malta has been voted the world’s third best diving destination of 2012 by readers of Diver Magazine.
The results of the poll meant Malta was the top diving location in the Mediterranean, according to readers of the British publication and www.divernet.com.
Malta was first honoured with the same award in 2009. The awards ceremony was held on March 23 at the main LIDS hall at Excel London during the International Dive Show.
Egypt and the Maldives took first and second place respectively.
“A surprise third place went to the islands of Malta and Gozo. The temperate Mediterranean is sometimes overlooked in our rush to get to tropical sites, but the extremely clear water and wealth of wrecks, not to mention marine life, makes it a worthy recipient,” according to www.divernet.com.
Malta Tourism Authority UK director Alex Incorvaja said: “We have taken significant steps forward to protect our Mediterranean Sea and the environment, while simultaneously enhancing the diving product, ensuring everyone can experience the best diving the Mediterranean archipelago has to offer.”
