Malta’s leading long distance runners are expected to take part in this year’s Pembroke Road Races on Sunday.

Victor Camilleri, president of the Pembroke Athleta Athletics and Triathlon Club, told a news conference that entry for the 10km race, the main event on the day which starts at 8.30am, had briskly gathered pace. This was also the case of the shorter 5km, the Walk-Fun Run and the event for which the largest entry is always the case, the Nestle 1,200m race for children.

The 10K is set to develop into a tight affair with the club’s leading names Brian Magri, Mark Herrera and Drew Lang all likely to offer the biggest challenge to race favourite Jonathan Balzan.

Charles Micallef, who participated in every edition since the event’s inception in 1995, has also put his name down this year with the full intention of retaining his 70-plus category trophy won in previous editions of the Pembroke races.

Camilleri added the club laid a lot of emphasis on healthy participation to develop a concept of wellness, especially as from a young age.

He hoped that more parents and family members will continue to take part in the Walk-Fun Run to inspire participants to start a regular aerobic exercise.

Also present for the launching were Noel Muscat and Dean Hili, the respective mayors of Swieqi and Pembroke, who both pledged their support to the event.

Camilleri thanked all volunteers who helped in the organisation of this year’s races and also made an appeal to the authorities to support the club in their bid to have a tartan track installed at their locality.
