An Arriva bus driver fell ill and crashed into a centre strip opposite the Vodafone premises in Birkirkara yesterday.

None of the eight passengers was injured

A spokesman for Arriva said the driver had just pulled out of a bus stop when he collapsed at the wheel.

A colleague, driving by in another bus, stopped to give first aid and was soon joined by two nurses and a doctor who happened to be passing.

The driver was taken to hospital by ambulance and was visited by members of Arriva’s management.

None of the eight passengers on the bus was injured and they were all transferred to another bus to resume their journey.

In another two separate accidents, a man and a woman were injured in Qormi and Floriana. In the first, which took place at about 10.45am, a woman was hit by a car as she was crossing the road near Pavi supermarket in Qormi. Her condition was not known by the time of writing.

In the second, a 69-year-old motorcyclist from Rabat was grievously injured in a collision with a VW Golf being driven by a 68-year-old man from Lija, just up the road from Portes des Bombes at 11.15am.

Meanwhile, a 54-year-old man from Żabbar, who had been run over on Christmas Eve in Marsascala, died yesterday.
