FLORIANA-2, MELITA-0

Floriana made sure of retaining their Premier League status this evening after a 2-0 victory over bottom side Melita gave them an unassailable lead over the bottom three teams.

Buoyed by a 4-2 over Qormi, Floriana proved too strong for a limited Melita team whose hopes of avoiding the drop are looking increasingly remote as they remained bottom with 10 points from 28 games. The first half was short of scoring chances. Floriana winger Trevor Cilia hit wide after receiving from Steve Pisani on seven minutes.

Melita responded with a long-range drive by Nigel Rizzo which ended just over the crossbar. The Greens opened the scoring on the half-hour thanks to Joseph Borg who scored with a powerful header after meeting a cross by Sacha Borg.

Early in the second half, Floriana's Udo Nwoko, who had just replaced Trevor Cilia, fired wide while Pisani's weak effort was saved by Philip Schranz, the Melita goalkeeper. Floriana continued to create the better chances. Two minutes past the hour, Igor Coronado, off-colour in the first half, made a good run through the middle before passing to Kane Farrugia whose grounder was stopped by Schranz.

Coronado troubled the Melita defence again when drifting infield from the right before hitting a low shot that was fumbled by Schranz. Eight minutes from time, Floriana secured their win thanks to Coronado who sped into the box before drilling a low shot past Schranz.

Coronado was named BOV player of the match.
