An Arriva bus driver has been hospitalised after he fell ill while driving a bus to its destination.

According to unconfirmed reports, the driver suffered a heart attack.

A spokesman for Arriva said that the driver pulled at the bus stop opposite the Vodafone building in Birkirkara and collapsed on the steering wheel as soon as he pulled away.

This caused the bus to stop and mount the pavement. None of the eight passengers on the bus were injured. They were transferred to another bus and continued with their journey.

Another Arriva driver stopped to give first aid and he was soon joined by two nurses and a doctor who happened to be driving through the area.

The driver was then taken to hospital by ambulance, where he was visited by members of Arriva management.
