Three players have been banned for life for match-fixing.

They are Gaetan Spiteri, who was with Hamrun when the alleged case took place, and Floriana brothers Jermain and Chris Brincat.

Julian Briffa, a former Floriana, Sliema and Mqabba player, has also been banned for life but the prosecuting officer has recommended a partial amnesty as he cooperated with the investigators.

The amnesty can only be discussed during the MFA's general meeting which is usually held in summer.

The players have three days to file a notice of their intention to appeal and 14 days to file an appeal.

The decision, given by the Board to Adjudicate Charges related to Bribery and Illegal Betting in Football, was announced during a Malta Football Association council meeting today.

According to information released during previous council meetings, Mr Spiteri had tried to bribe a Sliema player in the Premier League Hamrun-Sliema game last season, which had ended 1-1. The go-between had been Mr Briffa, who at the time was with Mqabba.

It seems the Brincat brothers were involved in an attempted corruption case in the Naxxar-Gzira Division 1 game this season, which had ended 2-2.
