Suds, a Young Enterprise company set up by seven students from the Junior College, Msida, has introduced a new product that washes dishes in a more energy-efficient, environment-friendly way. It recently shifted its entire stock of 70 products in a day from its stand at the Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise Trade Fair at The Point, Sliema.
Called The Dishwand, the product incorporates a soap dispenser in the handle and a sponge with an abrasive pad at its head. Dishwashing liquid of the user’s choice is poured into the product’s handle and soap emerges from the sponge depending on how much pressure is applied. The company’s mission is “to encourage the public to stop using their dishwashers” through this simple product.
Commenting on the event outcome, Suds managing director Julian Naudi said: “We promoted our stand on TV and through our Facebook page, Suds Malta. Besides being a personal learning experience, it was incredibly beneficial to the company since it managed to expand its reach considerably.”
Besides generating sales, the Suds Kitchen stand also enabled the team to explain its mission and the benefits of the product as well as to demonstrate its ease of use, without getting their hands and formal attire dirty. The experience not only gave Suds an insight into how popular its product is but also gave its members a first-hand experience of reaching out to the public.
During the fair, the team was assessed on product quality, general company administration, stand presentation and general interaction with customers by judges who remained anonymous and acted as ordinary members of the public.
Suds is currently taking part in the HSBC Company of the Year Award, a Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise competition, in which post-secondary students set up and run their own business.
HSBC not only helps Young Enterprise financially but also provides the bank staff’s expertise and consultancy to help the young entrepreneurs develop their innovative ideas into concrete products that make business sense.
