Over the past 15 months, Billy Corito’s boxing pedigree has risen significantly thanks to his positive performances on the ring as a member of the European Boxing Federation (EBF) – Great Britain’s and Europe’s largest semi-professional boxing body.
Today, Corito is just one fight away from claiming top spot in the EBF heavyweight category. The Maltese will reach this target if he beats Micky Cotcher, known as ‘The Butcher’, tomorrow.
Corito is preparing for the big fight under the guidance of Barry Smith, a professional trainer from London’s top gym, the TRAD TKO Boxing Centre. Smith has visited Malta twice in recent weeks to conduct one-to-one training sessions with Corito.
“When I came down on my first trip in early March, I didn’t know what to expect but the whole point in being part of MBc (Professional Boxing Commission) is to help give pro training to the lads in Malta and give them an opportunity they so deserve,” Smith said.
“I came to Malta with an open mind, knowing that five days were not enough to train someone properly but I was willing to pack as much as possible into training Billy.
“After the first day of training, Billy surprised me with his natural movement and speed. I knew this fighter was a hard worker and had ability which is why he has won all his fights.”
Corito and Cotcher are known for their knock-out records. Corito has won nine out of 11 fights with Cotcher winning 29 out of his 32 encounters by KO.
“This fight will be a very big test for Billy,” Smith said. “After watching some videos of the opponent, I believe Billy is the better boxer.
“I’m 100 per cent sure Billy will win and I’m aiming for a knockout from him on Friday.
“He has overwhelming power in his punches which is such a crucial quality in boxing and in decisive fights.”
Smith has also been training local prospect Steve Martin (light welterweight) who will fight Shakeeb Ali tomorrow.
Tomorrow’s EBF Malta Night of Boxing, the fifth in the series organised by local promoter Paul Borg and the EBF, is being held at Monte Cristo Estates in Hal Farruġ, starting at 8.30pm.
