A local investor is prepared to operate a casino and absorb former employees of Casino di Venezia, the GWU has told the Government.

The Vittoriosa-based casino’s licence was suspended by the Gaming Authority and the jobs of 67 employees are in the balance.

GWU general secretary Tony Zarb said his interest was to find stable employment for the workers. The union had informed the Government of the interest there was in this sector despite the losses incurred by Casino di Venezia.

Mr Zarb pointed out that the Government could not simply grant a licence to a new operator but must make an open call.

He said the Lotteries and Gaming Authority followed the law when it suspended the licence of Casino di Venezia for failing to adhere to stipulated conditions due to years of accumulated losses.

Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness Edward Zammit Lewis yesterday met the GWU to discuss the situation.
