Updated - Kristy Debono was elected to parliament late this afternoon, becoming the third newcomer to parliament elected in casual elections to fill seats vacated by Nationalist MPs who were elected from two districts in the general elections.

The other two newcomers are cardiologist Albert Fenech and Marthese Portelli, president of the PN National Council.

Debono, an economist and former Net TV newscaster, was elected from the ninth district to fill a seat vacated by Robert Arrigo.

Earlier, Dr Portelli, was also elected from the ninth district to fill the seat vacated by Simon Busuttil.

The election of the two women means Malta now has a record 10 women MPs.

Prof Fenech  was elected from the tenth district to fill a seat vacated by George Pullicino.

Also elected today were former minister Censu Galea and former MPs Charlo’ Bonnici and Stephen Spiteri.

Vote-counting, at Naxxar counting centre, started at 8 a.m. and Stephen Spiteri was quickly elected to fill the seat on the second district vacated by Opposition leader Lawrence Gonzi.

Charlo' Bonnici was re-elected on the 11th district to fill the seat vacated by former health minister Joseph Cassar.

Albert Fenech made it after a tight contest with incumbent Karl Gouder, who only fell behind after the distribution of the votes of candidate Joanna Agius.

Other tight races followed, with Censu Galea only being re-elected after beating his daughter Graziella, the former Mayor of St Paul’s Bay, to Tonio Fenech’s seat on the 12th district.

Dr Portelli defeated Dr Debono in the first ninth district casual election with just 35 votes separating them after five counts, but it was then a relatively easy run for Dr Debono in the second casual election.

The casual elections for Labour candidates who were elected from two districts were held last Thursday.

MPs will be sworn in when Parliament convenes on Saturday morning.

Friendly competition. Censu Galea and daughter Graziella.
