Marlene Farrugia has resigned her role as aide to Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia, who is her partner.

Her resignation came amidst criticism of her appointment and potential conflict of interest.

Ms Farrugia, who is an MP, said that she feared that the excessive attention paid to her role could reduce the efficiency of the ministry in this initial and delicate phase of the legislature.

She had therefore decided to stop her formal role in the ministry while continuing to help Dr Farrugia in his political work.

She thanked all those who had supported her.

This morning, The Times quoted a spokesman for the Office of the Prime Minister saying the decision to appoint Ms Farrugia as aide to her partner Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia created no conflict of interest.

A spokesman said the Minister would shoulder political responsibility for all decisions and he had to ensure that the roles he assigned to his partner did not give rise to a conflict of interest.

“All MPs were elected to serve and all of them are very enthusiastic to do so as public servants,” the spokesman said in response to questions.

“Her offer to help in the Ministry was welcomed by the Prime Minister given that there is no conflict of interest and also on condition that she receives no financial remuneration.”
