Updated - Adds meeting with Parliamentary Secretary Edward Zammit Lewis - The General Workers Union has informed the Government of a local investor who is ready to operate a casino in Malta and absorb the workers of Casino' di Venezia which had its licence suspended by the Gaming Authority yesterday.

Casino di Venezia employs 67 people whose jobs are in the balance.

GWU General Secretary Tony Zarb said his interest was to find stable employment for the workers and the union therefore felt the need to inform the Government of the interest there was in this sector despite the losses incurred by Casino di Venezia.

Mr Zarb pointed out that the Government could not simply grant a licence to a new operator but must make an open call. He said the Lotteries and Gaming Authority followed the law when it suspended the licence of Casino di Venezia for failing to adhere to stipulated conditions due to years of accumulated losses.

The situation at Casino' di Venezia was among the subjects discussed when a GWU delegation called on Edward Zammit Lewis, parliamentary secretary for competitiveness and economic growth.

Dr Zammit Lewis reiterated the government's commitment to job creation and promised consultations with the social partners and all stakeholders before major decisions were taken.
