Updated - aircraft declared serviceable and resumes flight

An Air Malta Airbus A319 flying from Malta to Frankfurt diverted to Catania airport and performed an emergency landing today after smoke was detected in an oven in the rear galley.

The aircraft  was 10 minutes north of Sicily.

The situation was quickly brought under control by cabin crew.

All passengers and crew disembarked normally and are being looked after by Air Malta representatives.

Air Malta said members of the Italian Civil Aviation Authority inspected the aircraft in line with required procedures.

The aircraft was later declared serviceable and resumed the flight to Frankfurt after a four-hour stop.
