It was a lucky escape for the statue of the Risen Christ of Senglea when it leaned and very nearly crashed to the ground as it was being raised during the traditional Easter Sunday procession this morning.

Two runners were slightly injured but they were treated on site and continued to enjoy the celebrations, photographer Ian Pace said. The incident took place in Two Gates Street.

Eyewitness Jasen Phillips said one of the runners holding the statue tripped and it was then a domino effect with the other runners. The statue leaned a couple of times but it did not touch the ground thanks to the enthusiasts who held on to it.
